Mad Libs – the App

Educational App rating: 6+

All tweens love Mad libs. A story is created with some of the verbs, adjectives, nouns, and adverbs missing. One person asks for the missing words and writes them down. The other person chooses the missing words. The result is a hilarious, mismatched, nonsensical story. Great fun. Penguin books has created a Mad Libs app. It is the same concept as the paper version, except no one has access to the story. Instead, blank spaces are offered with the word, ‘adjective’ or ‘noun’ next to them. This has the added bonus of being able to play alone for the times that the tween wants to be a little naughtier than a parent will allow. After completing a page, you have the option of emailing, tweeting, take a picture to put next to the story, and share it on Facebook.

This is an educational game wrapped in an app. By the end of a few games, your child will have a good understanding of verbs, adjectives, nouns, and adverbs. This app kept my 11 year old son occupied on a long plane ride. For the first few games, he played with me. Then, wanting to use more potty words, he played alone. Ah, the joy of a few minutes alone! The basic version is free. The specific versions like Cool Mad Libs, a recipe for ice cubes, or Goofy Mad Libs (aren’t they all?) costs $3.99. There is also a free version online similar to the free app.
