Meet the Robinsons is a Disney animated film released in 2007. It is the story of Lewis, a brilliant inventor who was abandoned on the steps of an orphanage as a baby. Despite many smoky failures, young Lewis persists in his inventions, encouraged by his science teacher. During a science fair, a boy shows up from the future trying to save Lewis from an evil bowler hat wearing man, and an even wickeder bowler hat. A journey to the future and to the past helps Lewis mend his loneliness and gives him hope for his own future.

I bought this DVD in 2008 when it was released. At the time, my sons were 7 and 9. My older son enjoyed the movie, but my younger son was terrified of the hat. He was so scared of the hat that he took the DVD out of the case, scratched the disc beyond repair, and threw it behind a heavy bookcase. We didn’t find it until last year during a plumbing disaster that caused us to move the bookcase. Now my sons are 11 and 13 and we all enjoyed the movie. Additionally, we all understood the movie. There are some subtle emotional nuances that were lost on the young boys that were appreciated by my now older sons. A fun movie, a happy ending, but a younger audience would not only be scared of the hat, they probably wouldn’t understand the twists and turns at the end that make the movie enjoyable.
